(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia is taking action in response to the winter weather that is currently affecting the mid-Missouri area. According to a press release issued by the city, the National Weather Service (NWS) has declared a winter weather advisory in effect until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12. The NWS has also warned of potential snow accumulation of up to 1 inch.
The NWS has advised residents to be cautious as they travel, as slippery road conditions are expected and could impact the evening commute. As winter weather can be unpredictable, residents are urged to closely monitor the forecast and changing road conditions throughout the mid-Missouri area. Updates will be provided on the City's various social media platforms and on CoMo.gov.
In light of these conditions, several events have been postponed or canceled. The Water and Light Advisory Board meeting scheduled for February 12 has been moved to February 19. Additionally, the Substance Use Prevention Commission, Parking Advisory Commission, and Citizens Police Review Board meetings have all been canceled.
The City's Public Works department is prepared for the winter weather with a crew of 18 snowplow operators who will work overnight to monitor and treat priority roads as needed. With temperatures expected to drop to 10 degrees, wet streets may refreeze and create slick conditions. Drivers are advised to use caution while traveling, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated streets.

Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during this time. If driving is necessary, it is important to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and stay alert for changing road conditions. It is also crucial for drivers to give snowplows plenty of space and not attempt to pass them on the right as they may create unexpected drifts.
Go COMO fixed route bus service will continue operating normally on February 12. However, paratransit users may experience cancellations or delays due to difficulties navigating neighborhood streets. Riders are advised to use caution when moving from their front door to the van. In case of an emergency, residents should dial 911.
The City of Columbia Utilities department has also provided updates on their services during this time. Residential curbside refuse and recycling collections will continue as scheduled. If your collection was missed, please report it to the Contact Center at 573.874.CITY (2489) or online at CoMo.gov/city-managers-office/report-an-issue.
To ensure efficient trash collection and snow removal, residents are reminded to follow guidelines for roll cart placement during winter weather, which can be found on CoMo.gov/city-source/december-2024/roll-cart-placement-winter-weather.
The City of Columbia is working diligently to address the impacts of the winter weather and urges residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this time.
