(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia recently welcomed a delegation from its sister city, Suncheon City, South Korea on November 13th. The 13 delegates were given the opportunity to explore various locations in Columbia such as the University of Missouri campus, North Village Arts District, Columbia's Agriculture Park, and the Columbia Public Library.
The visit also included meetings with members of the Columbia City Council and a special dedication ceremony at Stephen's Lake Park where a tree was planted to commemorate the visit. The delegates also attended Regional Economic Development Inc.'s (REDI) annual meeting where they were able to gain insight into economic development in the region.
Suncheon City and Columbia have been Sister Cities since October 18th, 1991. This partnership has led to several visits from Suncheon City delegates in the past, including one in 2015. In 2010, both cities issued a joint proclamation reaffirming their relationship under the leadership of their respective mayors at that time.

In 2013, the City of Columbia was invited to submit a garden design for the International Garden Exposition in Suncheon. This further solidified their bond and commitment to promoting cultural exchange and collaboration between the two cities.
The Sister Cities program aims to foster long-term relationships between citizens of different cities and promote understanding through academic, cultural, and economic exchanges. In addition to Suncheon City, Columbia has four other sister cities including Kutaisi, Republic of Georgia; Hakusan City, Japan; Laoshan District, Qingdao, Shandong Province, People's Republic of China; and Sibiu, Romania.
The visit from Suncheon City's delegation was a testament to the strong bond between these two cities and their dedication to learning about each other's cultures. It is through initiatives like this that we can continue to build bridges and create opportunities for mutual understanding and collaboration among cities around the world.
