(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia Water Utility has been recognized for its outstanding efforts in promoting community water fluoridation. The Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD) and the American Dental Association (ADA) have awarded the city with the 2024 State Fluoridation Award.
Fluoridation is the process of adjusting fluoride levels in drinking water to a level that effectively prevents tooth decay. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every dollar invested in fluoridation saves at least $32 per person per year in dental treatment costs. This makes community water fluoridation one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.
In Missouri, 76.8% of residents receive the benefits of fluoridated water from their community water supplies. The City of Columbia has played a significant role in promoting this practice and ensuring a consistent level of fluoridated water throughout 2023-24.
