(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Utilities Recognized by EPA for Water Conservation Efforts
The City of Columbia Utilities has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for their outstanding efforts in promoting water efficiency. The EPA, through its WaterSense program, has acknowledged the city's commitment to conserving water and promoting the use of water-efficient products.
WaterSense is a voluntary partnership program sponsored by the EPA that aims to help U.S. citizens save water. It provides a label for water-efficient products and serves as a resource for consumers and businesses looking to reduce their water consumption. With over 2,000 utility, manufacturer, retail, builder, and other organizational partners, WaterSense has helped save 8.7 trillion gallons of water and $207 billion on consumer utility bills since its inception in 2006.
City of Columbia Utilities offers two programs to encourage water conservation among residential and commercial customers. The irrigation conservation program promotes the use of efficient irrigation appliances such as sprinkler heads, rain sensors, and WaterSense-rated smart irrigation controls. The Efficient Flush program encourages customers to replace older, less efficient toilets with new WaterSense-rated models.

In addition to these programs, City of Columbia Utilities also provides water conservation kits to income-eligible households that receive pledges for utility assistance from Central Missouri Community Action and the Boone County Health Department. These kits help reduce customers' water consumption and promote sustainable practices.
David Sorrell, Director of City of Columbia Utilities expressed his pride in the recognition received from the EPA. "Behind this great program is a dedicated and passionate staff committed to providing quality programs to the citizens of Columbia," he said. "Our citizens are increasingly looking for ways to conserve resources and save money, and our department is committed to providing possible solutions. It is great to have recognition of this hard work and dedication."
Apart from these initiatives, City of Columbia Utilities also conducts education sessions on water conservation for elementary school children every year, reaching approximately 1,000 students. These educational programs are tailored to the students' age group and aim to instill sustainable habits from a young age.
