(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ The City of Columbia is gearing up for an exciting event as the Office of Cultural Affairs prepares to host the Artist Laureate Kickoff Reception on Tuesday, May 19. The reception will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Boone County History & Culture Center's Montminy Gallery, located at 3801 Ponderosa St.
The highlight of the evening will be the introduction of the 2026 Artist Laureate, Audra Sergel. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Sergel and learn more about her community project, "When a City Sings: Columbia in Concert." This year-long initiative aims to bring together the voices of the community through choral performances and storytelling.

The reception will kick off with remarks at 5:45 p.m., followed by a short and interactive teaser workshop. This workshop will give guests a taste of how stories and shared reflections can come together to create beautiful music, with no musical experience required.
Guests will also have the chance to learn about upcoming workshops and events related to Sergel's project. They can sign up to participate throughout the year and explore ways to get involved in this unique community initiative.
