(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia will be hosting a special event to show appreciation for its volunteers on September 9th at Twin Lakes Recreation Area. The event, which will begin at 6 p.m., is open to all those who have volunteered with the city over the past year.
According to the city's press release, volunteers have played a crucial role in contributing over 32,200 hours towards various programs and projects during the 2024 fiscal year. This equates to a value of more than $1 million based on national standards for volunteer service. By volunteering, residents are able to directly engage in the activities of local government and help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of programs and services.

One special recognition that will take place at the event is the presentation of the 2024 Howard B. Lang, Jr. Award posthumously to Rich Eyler. Eyler had been a dedicated volunteer with the city since 2005 until his passing earlier this year, contributing over 7,000 hours of service. The award aims to honor a Columbia citizen each year for their outstanding volunteer work with the city.
Volunteers play a vital role in various aspects of city life such as working in parks, beautifying streets, promoting recycling, assisting at festivals and events, and ensuring community safety.
