(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia is closely monitoring and preparing for potential winter weather that could impact the mid-Missouri area this weekend. According to a press release issued by the city, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch in effect from Saturday evening, Jan. 4 through Sunday night, Jan. 5.
The NWS is forecasting heavy mixed precipitation, with possible snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 12 inches and ice accumulations between one-tenth and one-half of an inch. They have also warned of potential power outages and tree damage due to ice, stating that "travel could be nearly impossible." The hazardous conditions may also affect the Monday morning commute.

In response to this forecast, the City of Columbia is taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of its community. The Public Works department has begun prepping snowplows, materials, and equipment while closely monitoring local, state, and regional forecasts. They have also developed a response plan in case of severe weather.
Additionally, the City of Columbia Utilities will have extra crews on standby in case of downed power lines. As winter weather can be unpredictable, residents are advised to stay updated on the forecast and road conditions throughout the mid-Missouri area. It is recommended to run errands and shop for groceries early to avoid travel during inclement weather.
