(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia is gearing up for the upcoming winter season with its annual Dry Snow Run training exercise on Wednesday, Nov. 5. This event will bring together Public Works Street division crews and staff from other City departments involved in winter weather response to review safety procedures and rehearse snow routes.
The exercise will commence as crews depart from the Grissum Building located at 1313 Lakeview Ave between 10 and 10:30 a.m. Throughout the day, residents may notice City snowplow trucks traveling their designated routes across Columbia, simulating real-time response conditions.
This training is crucial for drivers to familiarize themselves with their routes, identify any new traffic patterns or construction areas, and ensure equipment is operating safely before the first snowfall. With over 1,465 lane miles of roadway and 1,100 cul-de-sacs to maintain each winter, the Street Division has a big responsibility on their hands.

Priority routes make up more than 691 lane miles and form a network of major and residential streets across Columbia. When snow accumulation is under 4 inches, crews focus on these priority routes. If time and conditions allow, they may also address neighborhood streets during regular business hours.
However, when snowfall exceeds 4 inches, crews work around the clock to clear priority routes and restore near-normal conditions before moving into residential areas. Streets are considered passable when a front-wheel-drive vehicle can safely travel one lane below the posted speed limit.
In addition to this training exercise, Public Works will be adding five new snow-capable trucks to its fleet this winter as part of the City's continued investment in equipment reliability and response efficiency. Two trucks are expected to arrive in November while three more will join in January.
