(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ The City of Columbia has announced the appointment of D'Markus Thomas-Brown as the first Office of Violence Prevention administrator. This new office, established by the city, aims to reduce community violence and promote public safety and wellbeing. Thomas-Brown will officially assume his role on March 31.

City Manager De'Carlon Seewood expressed his confidence in Thomas-Brown, stating that his extensive experience, training, and strong connections within the community make him an ideal fit for the position. Seewood also highlighted Thomas-Brown's understanding of the unique challenges faced by the city and his proven ability to engage with residents and community partners.

Thomas-Brown brings a wealth of experience to this role, having previously served as regional director of Good Dads Inc. since 2024. He also held positions as managing director of in2Action, program director for the Reentry Opportunity Center (ROC), and account strategist for Influence & Co.

In addition to his professional experience, Thomas-Brown is a certified harm reduction specialist with the Missouri Credentialing Board and a certified trauma informed community specialist with TMT Consulting Knowledge Academy. He is also a certified peer specialist and has received training in mental health first aid from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

Thomas-Brown holds a bachelor's degree in international business and management as well as a master's degree in business administration and management from Columbia College. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in global leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Expressing his gratitude for this opportunity, Thomas-Brown stated that he is humbled by the confidence placed in him by City Manager Seewood and his team. He emphasized his commitment to identifying and addressing root causes of violence in various neighborhoods, particularly focusing on areas such as education, financial stability, and health.

Thomas-Brown believes that this position can bring about systemic change by empowering individuals and families. He looks forward to working closely with City Manager Seewood, city staff, and community partners to enhance existing initiatives and make a positive impact in the community.

The Office of Violence Prevention, under Thomas-Brown's leadership, will be responsible for coordinating the development, implementation, and evaluation of violence prevention programs and initiatives. By collaborating with law enforcement, community organizations, government agencies, and key stakeholders, the office aims to develop effective strategies that will reduce violence and improve public safety and wellbeing in Columbia.
