(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - Engineering Surveys & Services (ES&S), the design contractors for the City of Columbia Public Works department, have announced that they will be conducting subsurface investigations along the Forum Boulevard corridor starting on Thursday, Nov. 21. This work is part of the ongoing Forum Boulevard improvement project and is expected to continue throughout the remainder of November.
Using a drill rig, contractor crews will be taking soil samples along Forum Boulevard between Chapel Hill Road to the north and the intersection of Woodrail Avenue and Crestwood Lane to the south. The purpose of this soil testing is to assess subsurface conditions and inform design decisions for the planned improvements. This will ensure the long-term stability and safety of the project.
Residents in the area may notice technicians and engineers in high-visibility clothing working near the road, as well as vehicles and equipment from ES&S and City of Columbia Public Works. The drilling work is scheduled to continue until Nov. 29, weather permitting. However, adjustments may need to be made based on rain or snow forecasts.

While two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the drilling and soil sampling process, lane shifts and narrowing may occur temporarily during daytime activities. Overnight lane restrictions are not expected. Pedestrians and cyclists should also be aware that some areas along Forum Boulevard and under the Hinkson Creek bridge will have restricted access. The MKT Trail will remain open but there may be narrowing and traffic control measures near the Forum Boulevard tunnel.
The City of Columbia is urging all users of the Forum Boulevard corridor to exercise caution and stay alert while crews are at work.
The Forum Boulevard improvement project was initiated after voters passed a quarter-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax extension in August 2015. The project design includes adding a new driving lane in both directions, wide sidewalks on both sides of the roadway, and replacing the existing bridge over Hinkson Creek. Additionally, several intersections and entrances will be improved to enhance traffic safety and operations on the corridor.
Construction on the Forum Boulevard improvements is expected to begin by summer 2026. The City of Columbia is committed to keeping residents informed and will provide updates as the project progresses.
