ST. LOUIS, July 23, 2024 ~ According to a recent study conducted by Clever Real Estate, a real estate company based in St. Louis, the majority of residential real estate investors have experienced financial losses. The research revealed that 90% of investors have lost money on their investments, with almost half (42%) reporting losing more money than they have made.
The study also found that nearly half of the investors (42%) have lost a staggering amount of $200,000 or more on a single investment. Even more concerning is the fact that 45% of these investors admit that a bad investment has almost ruined them financially. In hindsight, 40% of the respondents expressed regret and wished they had never started investing in residential real estate.

When asked about their biggest regrets, 87% of the investors cited issues with tenants as the main cause for concern. More specifically, 51% struggled with dealing with bad tenants while 52% faced severe property damage caused by tenants.
This research highlights the risks and challenges associated with residential real estate investing and serves as a cautionary tale for those considering entering this market. It also raises an important question - what is the most money you have ever lost on a real estate investment?
