Springfield, Mo. ~ Springfield, Mo. - The Springfield Police Department has recently welcomed 20 new recruits to the 79th Springfield Police Academy. This diverse group of individuals includes 13 men and seven women from various locations across the country, such as California, Arizona, Florida, and Missouri.

The recruits come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, including military service, security work, corrections, medical fields, social services, and private businesses. They will now embark on a rigorous six-month training program that consists of 1,070 hours of intense law enforcement training.

Upon graduation from the academy, the recruits will then undergo an additional 640 hours (16 weeks) of on-the-job training with an experienced field-training officer (FTO). After completing this program, they will be assigned to the Uniform Operations Bureau as new officers.

In addition to the police recruits, one member of the Springfield Fire Department will also participate in the academy to receive specialized training to become a fire marshal.

For those interested in joining the Springfield Police Department's next academy class (80th Academy), recruitment is ongoing and applications can be found on their website at gospd.com. The next academy is set to begin in May 2025.
